The second main group of flowering plants, the Dicots, are characterized by having the floral symmetry most frequently based on the number 5. The chief veins of the leaves are divergent, with heavy cross connections. The Dicots are separated into two subdivisions, on the basis of corolla characters.

The first subdivision Free-petal, the petals are free from one another, or else have, in the course of evolution become obsolete.
