• Apply grub control to lawn areas.

• Because Lilacs start growth very early in spring, autumn is the best season for planting them.

• Beds and borders should be weed to prevent the spread of weed seeds.

• Bring plenty of potting soil and supplies indoors for winter work.

• Burn hollow stemmed refuse such as Dahlia stalks to control stem borers.

• Clean, oil and store lawn mower and power equipment.

• Clean up any frost blackened annuals.

• Cut and burn tops of Peony and Iris to destroy disease spores and eggs of insects.

• Cut off spent flower heads from garden Phlox.

• Continue planting spring-blooming bulbs.


• Dahlia roots should be dug and stored in a cool, dry place.

• Dig tender bulbs after first killing frost, allow bulbs to dry before storing for winter.

• Divide overgrown clumps of Rhubarb.

• Fall planted trees, shrubs and perennials should not be fertilized at planting time.

• Finish planting Peonies.

• Get out and enjoy the beautiful display of color the trees are putting on.

• Give succulent rock garden plants a collar of stone chips.

• Blackberry and Raspberry canes that bore fruit this year can be cut to the ground.

• For colorful indoor blooms, start potting up pots of bulbs to be forced indoors.

• Harvest crops of apples.


• If you burn wood, start splitting and stacking firewood for this season.

• If your garden pond is shallow, net up fish and bring indoors for winter.

• Keep cutting the lawn, it should not go through winter long.

• Look for all kinds of interesting seed pods and fruit for use in fall decorations.

• Make border changes now so plants will have a chance to get their roots settled before the ground freezes.

• Make repairs and clean your chimney before the first use of the season.

• Order a bale of salt hay for mulching strawberry beds.

• Pick green tomatoes before first frost.

• Pot up late blooming Chrysanthemums for flowering indoors.

• Prepare the ground for new rose bushes arriving next month.


• Rake up leaves and add them to the compost pile.

• Root crops of vegetables, except Parsnips and Salsify can be dug now for winter storage.

• Set mole traps if any mole activity is spotted, place them in highly used runs.

• Small trees and shrubs will appreciate a mulch of manure laid around them at this time.

• Sow seeds of perennials in cold frames now for next years blooming plants.

• Start bringing in and storing garden benches, accessories and patio furniture.

• Store all garden chemicals in a locked cabinet.

• Take cuttings from Geraniums now before the killing frosts.

• This is a great time to select shade trees for fall color.

• To extend your harvest, protect Eggplants, Peppers and Tomatoes on nights that threaten frosts.
